Imagination is characterized by a pronounced focus on practical activity - the mode of action always precedes the action itself.

The physiological basis of the imagination is the creation of new combinations of existing temporary connections and involves the joint work of both the first and second signal systems. The word acts as the source of the appearance of the image and consolidates the emerging combination of connections.

Representing some separation from reality, imagination is always based on it. Imagination creates an image of the concept of a certain object before the manifestation of the object itself. The act of contemplation of a separate concept, which has not received a logical design, but correlated with universal categories at the level of feelings, leads to the creation of a holistic image of the situation.

Psychology distinguishes between arbitrary imagination, with the conscious solution of various kinds of tasks with a clear understanding of the goal, and the involuntary imagination manifested in dreams. A dream is a special form of imagination aimed at the future and does not imply the obligatory obtaining of a result or the identity of this result with an imaginary, but serving as a motivation for creative efforts.

There are two types of imagination - active and passive. The active is characterized by an external orientation, based on real-life events and time frames, controlled by the will of man. Types of active imagination are:
- creative or artistic imagination, expressed in the individual creation of certain ideas or images;
- recreating imagination, manifested in the creation of new images based on verbal or visual stimulation;
- anticipatory imagination, allowing to predict the development of certain events on the basis of existing experience.

Passive imagination, divided into voluntary (dreams and dreams) and involuntary (hypnosis), is determined by the internal characteristics of a person and is subjective. The main purpose of the passive imagination is to satisfy some unrealized or unconscious needs and to supplant various kinds of affects.
