Compliments are made in order to demonstrate one’s good attitude to a person, to cheer him up or simply to note the positive aspects of his character, his appearance or professionalism. It would seem that you need to take them with pleasure. However, not everyone knows how to react to them correctly.

Error 1.

The first erroneous reaction is embarrassment. It is typical for people who have too low self-esteem. They immediately begin to blush, turn pale, deny their virtues, and so on. And any mistake, of course, has consequences. If the embarrassed reddened face and downcast eyes can still give the person a touching look, then the ridiculous mumble and emphasis on their shortcomings will not make the interlocutor the best impression. It can also offend him, because by doing so you show your interlocutor that his opinion is not important to you.

Error 2.

The second mistake is the inability to respond to a compliment. Such a reaction is typical for people who do not like to be in the spotlight and simply do not know how to respond to compliments. They also begin to belittle or completely deny their advantages and merits. Or they begin to answer with standard answers, namely to make exactly the same compliment in response. The standard response to a compliment or copying a compliment will give your interlocutor the impression that you are indifferent to him, you are busy with your own affairs and you don’t have to pay compliments at all now.

Error 3.

The third mistake is distraction and suspicion. This is typical for scattered people who are constantly busy with their thoughts and too suspicious can simply ignore the compliment. The former can do this because they simply do not have time to turn their attention. The second ones do this because they start to suspect something is amiss and start to wonder why it was suddenly the interlocutor decided to make a compliment. But the interlocutor himself, in turn, may decide that you are just proud. If he is not closely acquainted with you and he does not know the features of your character, such as distraction, this will lead to a deterioration in relations between you.
