Young children are mostly afraid of the dark, and this is easily explained from the point of view of adaptation to the environment. Even distant ancestors were afraid of the dark due to the unknown and the security threat emanating from it. When a sense of fear manifests itself in adults, it is advisable to solve these problems so as not to start the situation.

About the fear of the dark

In the scientific literature, the fear of darkness or night is called achluophobia, ecluophobia, nihophobia or scotophobia. The symptoms of the manifestation of this fear do not depend on the name.

Man is not afraid of the darkness itself, but of what may be hidden in it. And the human imagination plays a big role in this, which can be fueled by horror movie frames, horror stories and various urban legends. Whenever possible, it is best for particularly impressionable people to minimize the impact of such frightening things.

Anyone can be frightened of some strange noise or creak in the dark - this is quite normal. It is important for him to find out the cause of these sounds and stop the panic. But if a person even in the afternoon has panic thoughts about the upcoming night, nightmares or sleep disturbances arise, his heartbeat quickens and his breathing becomes difficult at nightfall, the problem must be solved until it brings him to a mental deviation.

help yourself

To get rid of the fear of the dark, we need serious deep work on ourselves. However, it is worth remembering your safety from a rational point of view. Walking at night on the outskirts of the city, overcoming fear, is still not worth it. And here not irrational things should frighten here, but malicious hooligans with bats, which usually gather in "flocks". Oh, they can definitely add unpleasant minutes, although this is not ghosts or drums.

Firstly, a positive attitude is very important. Special affirmations, which can be pronounced in my free time, will help me find it: “In the dark I feel comfortable”, “Darkness gives me a feeling of security”, etc. We must not succumb to panic at night, but pronounce these magic words to ourselves.

Secondly, it is important to approach the moment of falling asleep in full readiness: relaxed, with an "empty" head, freed from all extraneous thoughts. If a person is bothered by something, then the process of falling asleep will be difficult, and at night without sleep he will not forget to visit the fear of the dark. You need to plan ahead for the upcoming day so as not to think about it while lying down, preventing the body from relaxing and falling asleep.

Thirdly, if sleeping in the dark is completely unacceptable for a person, you can buy a lamp or a night lamp with dim light. Doctors do not recommend sleeping with bright light, but you can afford a little support in this regard. You can also leave light in the next room or in the corridor so that some area in the apartment or house is lit.

Additionally, you can "use" your loved ones and relatives. It is good if the other half is sleeping next to a person who is not afraid of the dark, otherwise they both come up with something that even Stephen King could not dream of. As children are asked to put them next to their parents, so adults can sometimes ask for support from loving people for these purposes. And in this situation, pets can be allowed to sleep nearby on the bed or on the rug next to it. A peaceful snoozing of a pet nearby can quickly reassure the owner.

With frightening sounds or visions, you need to try to understand the reason that causes them. When there is a logical explanation for what is happening, you can not be afraid. So, creaking floorboards, a door that has suddenly closed or a spot flickering somewhere can be explained by the life of the neighbors, the effect of the wind or the shadow of a tree outside the window. To invent monsters, ghosts and other evil spirits is a departure from reality. There is no evidence from science about such things, you just need to reason logically. Another thing is that it is difficult to reason logically in situations of severe phobia or panic attacks, and specialists should already turn to this problem.
