Have you noticed that people in a company look more attractive than one by one? If you watch the teams and their members, this can be easily seen, and this has a name in science - the cheerleader effect, which can be easily used to achieve certain goals!

The cheerleader effect (the cheerleader form is found) is a phenomenon that is known to many not from scientific articles, but from the words of one of the characters in the How I Met Your Mother series by the name of Barney Stinson, who claimed that people in the company look much more attractive than singly.

Why cheerleaders?

Cheerleaders are members of a support group, the hallmark of which are extravagant outfits and bright pompons in their hands. Girls usually present stunts with elements of dance and acrobatics. Cheerleader clothes are usually in the same color scheme and favorably emphasize the overall attractiveness of the support team. But does it work with every single girl?

The opinion of scientists

For a long time no one took this observation seriously until scientists found out - the effect of cheerleaders does exist. Studies were conducted at American (California) and Australian (Adelaide) universities, in which participants were asked to evaluate a person’s appearance in a group and individual photo.

Participants in this experiment confirmed that a person looks more attractive in a company. Repeated repetition of such experimental results strengthened scientists in their point of view. Drew Walker of the University of California tested Barney Stinson’s hypothesis five times and concluded that the cheerleader effect is achieved in a few cognitive “steps”:

  1. When viewing a collective photo, the human eye automatically combines all the faces in the picture into one, because in this case, the focus of perception is scattered.

  2. Small details of faces and clothes are blurred and lost in the general appearance of the company depicted in the picture, which creates the effect of the integrity of the image, which corresponds to the average.

  3. The average image created by the brain is perceived as reliable and most harmonious.
